Nah didnt buy it recently. It goes all the way through ~40mm thick board. Its about 170mm wide and the stain is maybe 150mm long!

How do you know it goes all the way through? Is it possible the board was stored on edge and something dripped onto it and ran down both sides?

This is after planing. Then on the back side I got a chisel and dug in about 3mm.

edit: also you see it down the edge

edit2: I presume something happened to this tree? But I have never seen discolouration go across the grain like that. Pinhole borer sometimes has black dots that run across like this but there is no signs of borer on this part of the board

Could it be an iron stain from something like a fencing wire being wrapped around the tree for a long time before it was milled? If it is iron stain oxalic acid might fix it?

Wouldn’t be surprised if its sticker stain from when it was racked out during the air drying stage.

I have dealt with similar problems by lightly staining the rest of the piece up to match the dark patches .

    Hey Presto !
    All gone .

My last comment . That’s after trying all bleaching options .
Oxalic acid and Ammonia and peroxide at different strengths .
A & P could work but you will only know by testing it .
Then it would also have to be worked out at what strength to use it because if it’s to strong it will cause larger dis colouration problems .

Is it possible for it to get through the entire board though? It's crazy it's gone all the way through!

Yeah it is, I’ve seen timber that was slabbed and would’ve made great tables etc but had to be resawn into boards for general purpose use.

You can but its very strong. Do some tests first. Ive seen stains like that that nothing would touch though, so good luck.

wow. What type of stickers would cause staining like this? Normal timber stickers?

I see. How would you tackle this? Would you try and just do the dark bit or bleach the entire board?
