    Default Standars of MDF?

I have used a fair bit of 16mm MDF over the last 6 months

Looking at the local pricing, Home Hardware sells 8 by 4s at $30ish per sheet. The same stuff from Bunnings is $35/$36 per sheet.

On principle, I won't dud Home by looking for the discount at Bunnings, but I wonder whether there are different grades of MDF.

    Bill,
don't know about other manufacturers but Laminex make a standard grade and a moisture resistant grade. The MR grade costs about 50% more.

I think you will find Bunnings are overpriced by at least 10 percent on all timber products. A lot of it is imported by Bunnings themselves.

I tackled one of the managers that I know at the Tamworth branch and commented about their prices compared to some of the specialist wholesalers around town. He replied to me that they were only interested in the retail trade.

They dont actively chase the building industry now and have taken their builders reps off the road and have them inside serving the public.

Any builders that have accounts with them if they dont maintain a certain level of purchases they close their accounts.

I dont think their quality is better than any one elses, in fact some of the timber products that I have bought from them compared to the other builders supply in Tamworth seem to be inferior especially with construction grade plywood and I have decided not to buy from them any longer.

Something I've noticed is that the dust created by the router or saw squeaks when you walk on it...not natural.

That's why I wondered if it was made of other product than......er.......whatever MDF is made of

Your looking at the 2000's version of asbestos.

Not long now til the cancers start coming out due to exposure to MDF.

    Nasty stuff.

Do you think they will have to dismantle all MDF products like they did with asbestos????

I cut a whole **** load of MDF on my driveway and didn't sweep the saw dust up. After a couple of weeks it ate some very large holes in the concrete ( about 15mm deep in parts) imagine what it is doing to our lungs!

You had better tell the road breakers about that one, could reduce your local tax rates considerably

Working professionally in the commercial kitchen manufacturing sector, we go thru bulk boards (6-8 semis of whiteboard per month) and also a large qty of mdf.

I am no longer on the tools but every now and then i do the odd job. and if i have been using mdf i break out in a rash.

It will become a problem. No high ris e appartment jobsite will allow it to be cut on site whithout a "cleanroom" set up with full extraction.
