stanley 78 advice
Quick question. Stanley 78. Bevel up or down and ideal angle please? I inherited one and it is currently 35 degrees snd bevel up but I think that this could be wrong? Also posted in handtools unpowered for a quick response

Bevel down

I also have an inherited one which was bevel down when I got it, as has remained so for 10 years since.
My blade has a series of grooves across the top of the blade on the back (bevel side) to engage with the blade adjusting lever sited below the blade. You may be able to use the location of these to determine whether your blade has been reground bevel up, or just installed incorrectly in the past.I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

Yep. Found grooves on bottom eventually. Now installed bevel down 35 and have cut some lovely rabbets in the chest of drawers I am making. See Big stuff section.
