Default Do I have to start again with door rough opening?

Hello. I am about to install a 620 * 1240 pantry door. I thought I was going ok...put in the rough opening (its an old house) and thought I had enough space until I saw another article on this forum.

I have a total rough opening of 660......but just saw that someone else has advised 674 (jamb 19 each side; allowance froo plumbing jambs 10 and clearance each side 3mm).

Any suggestions please....I would rather not have to pull out the studs etc.

    Thanks

    Bil

I agree with the figures you're quoting. You need abt 5mm clearance for the door (2.5 x 2), and the studs are never plumb, so you need another 10mm, plus 20ish for the jambs (x2). So we have door width +5 + 40ish + 10ish. (or you can just cut the door down after it's hung.

Thanks TM. Would it be better to remove the stud and move it over 15mm OR "you can just cut the door down after it's hung" ?

How do I go about cutting the door down? Sorry for my ignorance

Move the stud. Dont cut down the door. Any extra space between door jamb and stud frame can be blocked by spacers to keep things secure. Better to have too much space than not enough.

If you make sure your studs are plumb, you will have 1mm clearance on each side, near enough to a slip in fit. If you want a bit more clearance just knock the studs over a bit with a hammer. 10mm clearance just means 10mm of packing. Save yourself the bother. A bit of close tolerance work is good for the heart muscle.

You definitely need more than 1mm clearance. The door needs space between the finished jambs so it can swing open and closed. 3mm each side would be a minimum.

How solidly did you fix the new stud in place? You can probably move a well fixed stud over a few mm by judicious application of a 4lb hammer. If the studs are not so well fixed you might get a big enough gap by working on the studs on both sides.

Rule 1 of renovating, If it doesn't fit get a bigger hammer.

Thanks everone for your help...I really appreciate it. I think I will try to remove stud and reposition for the extra 15mm.

Love your comment Fuzzie: "If it doesn't fit get a bigger hammer!"

    Thanks everyone

If you google "how to hang a door" you'll find quite a lot of howtos and videos such as the mitre 10 one that will help.
