    Default Get me started please...

Ok then... the discussion in this thread has got me interested in dovetails again. I don't plan on giving up the Gifkins as I love it, easy to set up and use.

Basically I have a set of Veritas dovetail markers (1:8 & 1:7), a couple of Japanese saws, marking knives & squares.

I know I need a fret saw but what chisels do I need? Right now I would like to buy one or two good chisels then gradually add to them over time. I am happy to purchase second hand and restore if required (if it saves me $$$ then thats a good thing). I was looking at the Harold and Saxon site and they are very pretty tools

I know this could get out of hand but I am here to learn (something I have a lot to do in this area)

    Hey Corbs,

I would start with a few nice second hand chisels from the markets before embarking on the Harold & Saxon journey. Titan / Ward all have great steel, much easier to sharpen than the M2 steel. Might cost you $15 - $20 each for a couple in ok condition.

I use a stanley coping saw ($30 from the Big B) and a japanese saw for cutting the dovetails. Be careful when using the jap saws on hardwood (spotty / jarrah), they struggle a little.

    Cheers,

    Tom

Corbs, That should be a better bet than the one I bought some years back.

Mine is a good brand name but everything just went sloppy and I can't adjust the tension so it will hold.

Thanks for the advice so far guys, there is a guy who has some old tools at the local market but its not something I have looked into in the past. Might have a closer look next time and check out some of the other markets around. I know Hall doesn't have anyone selling old tools and doubt the Bus Depot markets would either (haven't been so happy to be corrected). Happy to be pointed in another direction by those in the know though
