    Default Steam bending ply

    Hi everyone,

I am trying to find a place that steam bends ply for a peice of furniture I want to get manufactured. I don't have the space or time to do it myself and haven't had much luck on google or in the phone book. Can anyone suggest a place in the Brisbane area that does steam bending?

    Thanks
    Pippa

steam bending ply is unlikely to be successful.

You would need to hand laminate ply to your desired shape

I'm not sure about that Echnidna. Isn't there a ply called bending ply? But still, probably would be easier to laminate. Steem bending is usually for long thin things. Vacuum bags and such like over a form, are used for laminating into shapes. If you google 'laminating' you get stuff about it. (I'm only good for laminating things as big as teapot handles.)

P.S. Never noticed before but is echnidna spealt wrong?

Yes Tealady I'm a typo king.
You can't steam ply for 2 reasons.

    1. The glue may not be waterproof and the ply will delaminate.
    2. If the glue is waterproof it will prevent the steam from going past the first layer.

Bending ply is probably 1 of the easiest things to laminate the job out of.
Though some cheap thin ply (including wall panelling will bend readily enough to use.

An old boatbuilders trick is to put metho on the ply and set it alight before bending it. I suspect the heat softens the glue. Perhaps a PM to Boatmik could get more details.
