    Default Steamer Trunk

My wife's G/Grandfather arrived in Australia from Germany in 1872 with a arched lid steamer trunk size approximately 31" x 16" x 18". see attached photos of a similar trunk.
It was destroyed during a flood.
Would anyone know of a detailed plan as I am going to try to make a replica of it, other than being able to find a plan what type of join would most likely have been used during that period.
    Many thanks

Sorry no plans but my father's family have some Austrian Heritage and while dad came out to Australian in the early 1950s he brought with his a battered steamer trunk that belonged to his great grandfather so it would have been made in the mid 1850's. I remember it being made of a very soft light coloured wood (stained a dark brown) as a kid I could poke a hole with an ordinary pencil into the wood. Like the photo above all the corners and some edges were lined with blackened iron plates. Gorgeous old thing - would love to have it now.

Thanks for your reply Bobt, My wife said it was a lovely piece, she remembers it had iron straps over the top and braces at the corners. Family stories relate to the lid being lined with a German Newspaper under which was 200 francs, brought out to get him started in his new country.

Hello Burma, The AUST Woodsmith Issue 142 have steamer trunk plans [ cost $9.90 ? ] which is a bit different to yours but may give some ideas on construction. US Readers Digest Cabinet Making series may have plans also. Also I would have a look for US Colonial furniture designs. Regards Volvo
