    Default storage cabinet help

    hi all

looking at building a cabinet (which I never done before).

I have come across a few pics of one that looks pretty similar to one I want to build.

The size I have to work in is: 1150mm wide, 2300 tall, 600 deep.

Wondering if anyone can help me come up with a plan to build a cabinet like the one above. Bare in mind, I dont have all the necessary tools to build proper joints, so it will just be butt to butt jointed.

This also need to be light proof, as it will be designed as a horticultural cabinet to grow hydroponic tomatos in.

    Any help apprecaited!

    Yeah, yeah, we believe you.

That one looks like it's built from 19mm ply. You could use ply or MDF, but straight butt joints are not terribly strong, even when you have screws strengthening them. You'd probably be better making up simple pine frames, gluing them together and skinning them with thinner ply. The purists mightn't like it, but it's not going to sit in the lounge room, is it?

The frames can be simple lap joints at the corners and also should have some bracing, but the skin can be stapled and glued, and will provide most of the rigidity. (Saw a big stapler for $10 at the local $2 shop)

You will need some tools, eg hammer, saw, screwdriver, mallet & chisel, but that should be about it. If it doesn't have to be exactly those sizes, bear in mind that ply usually comes in 2400 x 1200 sheets, so you may be able to re-size and minimise cutting. Since there will be water around, you should give it a few coats of paint or varnish inside and out, and provide a drain hole just in case water spills.

There are probably a lot of other ways of doing it - that's just one fairly simple one.

Buy a flat pak from Bunnings and all you need is a cordless screw driver.

What about checking out the secondhand shops/ garage sales/ junkyards for something roughly the dimensions you need, and altering it to fit?
