    Default Structural Pine?

    Hei Folks,
Possibly a dumb question, but is there any difference in strength between structural and furniture pine or is it just the finish?
    Thanks
    Paul

No Question is dumb, it shows that you are willing to learn new things .

The difference between structural and furniture, is that structural has been graded and has to have a minimal amount knots to pass. Whereas furniture grade generally is quite knotty.

Structural pine is machine graded for strength, it's appearance is not considered at all (the machine is fully automated). Pine sold for furniture making would be sold on the basis of its required appearance, ie: some people want knotty pine furniture, others might prefer to use a "clear" pine (no knots). In general these will come from different species.

    Thanks for that guys.
I'm building a loft type bed for my sister in law (who is 12yrs old and 5'10) but she's too big to have a desk underneath.
What I'm thinking is a structural pine creation that will give her storage space underneath.

I think there is pine and pine... A company over here has just been fined $900k for grading timber stronger than it should have been (or something like that). Also, those treated pine posts that are driven into the ground for fences - some posts from some forests are better than others. It is partly knots and partly how fast it grows maybe... I'd guess a span of 6' or so - it's not going to be a structural issue - then I'm a cowboy sometimes.

Yeap, there is no such thing as a dumb question if it saves a dumb mistake.
You do get some dumb questions, here is a story about one but you will need access to the Open Slather Forum to read it.
