Default Best stuff to remove sap off hands?

I'm sanding down a stack of stringybark, and I'm guessing it's still a little green, because my hands have this black crap on them.

It's not sticky or anything, just looks like crap.

I've scrubbed with soap, detergent, the car grease remover (which cuts through thick grease like nothing else), but it's still there.

Even scratching with a nail in the shower isn't bringing much off.

Any suggestions? I've got a work party in a few days, and I'd rather not have horrible looking hands.

    The black stuff is tannin.
Cut a lemon in half and used it skin and all like a piece of soap, the lemon oil and citric acid combo should help dissolve the tannin.

Yes vinegar works but I prefer the lemon oil fragrance and the oil leaves a softer skin feel - crikey - It sounds like a cosmetics or dishwashing powder commercial.

there used to be a product called Fauldings Barrier Cream -- which would protect your hands from motor oil and grease

might be worth investigating if something similar would help protect your hands from tannin

Some people (me for one) are allergic to citrus.

Oxalic acid works too but not so good on your hands. Sometimes the tannins from one sawdust will contaminate another timber. I had this happen on some Tassie oak which I cleaned up with some dilute Oxalic.

Vinegar, love the stuff, has heaps of other uses as well eg rust removal.

G'day Ian, I trust the balmy weather is not too hard to take. Is there a Lee Valley store close by? I assume you will be missing the February tool sale.

    Cheers

    hi Peter

"balmy" is the word. -19°C at around midday yesterday.
Was standing on the snow for the best part of 3 hours -- and my toes feel like they got a touch of frost bite.

Yes, unfortunately I'll miss the February Tool sale

BUT, Lee Valley is just over an hour own the highway -- just waiting for my tools to arrive

Thinking, more about getting your hands clean. . . .

If you are adverse to chemicals, just wear some nitrile (or latex) glove while doing some chores until you sweat. After about 30 minutes your hands will be clean enough to serve communion at church.

Derma Shield was another product for prevention. Hey say it puts on an invisible glove that even acid wont go thru. Not game to try the acid.

I have a can from the early 90ies. Still worked last time I tried and thatwas within the last decade
