Sturt 12 week course over!
Well I obviously did a lousy job at writing a weekly commentary as I had planned - I guess I didn't anticipate that we'd work such long hours on the course (some days we students would stay until 11) and squeezing work in there as well.
To put it briefly, the course was magnificent! Michael Fortune is truly a great maker and a great teacher. He came with a curriculum plan, but quickly adapted to the needs, skill level and desires of the students. Some completed two projects, one guy brought a bunch of uncompleted projects from his previous course work, and I managed to complete four projects in the 12 weeks. In between our supervised work time, Michael gave almost daily technique demonstrations, tool tips and opened our mind to the wonderous world of 'jig making'. (Michael builds one chair that takes 39 separate jigs!!)
The new skill set included three types of bending (laminations, steam bending and hot pipe bending), a variety of joinery (in one project I used mitred dovetails!), veneering and inlay, several types of drawer construction and of course finishing. The school itself is in a magnificent location and the support staff are a great bunch of very supportive, very knowledgeable friends. We also spent a lot of time interacting with the 12 month guys and the evening course people too. It's a great community and certainly adds to the enjoyment.
I could go on and on, but rather than make this a mega-post I will just say if there's any way you can arrange 12 weeks to attend one of the courses, you should absolutely do everything you can to get there. Reports of David Upfill-Brown who is running the last course of the year from people who have studied with him before are all super positive and Michael Fortune is scheduled to return in Jan 2011.
I've attached a few pics of my projects - I have more if you want to see them. Any specific questions about the course, the school or the projects I'd be pleased to talk for ages.Shine on you crazy diamond!

Excellent work, now you have to work on your own designs from the skills you have learnt.

Sounds as though you had a great and very rewarding time. Love the projects.

Very nice work Waveink. Glad you enjoyed the course. It is very much like a family there, with the various courses mixing, & great surroundings.
It'll be interesting to see you designs develop now that you have new skills. The design process is one of Michael's big things.

Hi waveink
Please do go on and on a bit more. It's great to hear about your experiences.
I'd love to see more photos of your time at the School and your work. I'd also love a bit more information about each of the projects you've pictured. Very intriguing!!
thanks

Beautiful work there, do you work off their designs there or do you work off your designs with their assistance? I am also really interested in hearing more about the course too
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Hi all,
I have been lurking around this Forum for a while, but have not previously posted. I am a recent retiree (mid last year) and have taken up woodworking and wood turning as hobbies since retiring - at this stage I am a complete novice (and often incompetent) at both.
I attended the just completed 12 week Sturt course along with Waveink and two other "fortunates". I can reiterate all that Waveink has posted - the program was fabulous, Michael Fortune is a master fine furniture maker, talented teacher and a great bloke to boot. The Sturt setup really has the feeling of a community - we had a number of ex-students from the 12 month program in years past as well as the 12 week program etc drop in to see what we were up to - and is a marvellous environment is which to learn and develop new skills.
As a novice I was indeed fortunate to be able to learn from Michael and also from the other students - in return I was able to provide the class with plenty of "learning opportunities" (as my many screw-ups became known).
All up, I can certainly recommend the 12 week Sturt program to anybody, from the novice to the experienced, who wants to develop their fine woodworking skills - no doubt 12 weeks set aside for pretty much nothing but woodworking is a real indulgence but from my perspective it was one which was well worthwhile.
I wasnt as prolific as Waveinc and only completed 3 projects - I will attach a piccy of a CD cabinet and base that I produced when I figure out how to. The base and cabinet carcase are Blackbean and the drawer fronts are Blackheart Sassafras veneer. Waveink and I did discuss what a perfect marriage his top and my legs would make but we never actually consumated the deal.
Cheers,
Jeff

Hi all,
I figured out how to upload the pic of CD cabinet I made on the Sturt 12 week course (see my earlier post) - not too difficult after all.
Cheers,
Jeff

Superb work, both of you! That course sounds great, and I'm sure they would welcome the free plug for the school!

Hey Jakor, good to see you mate - to quote MCF, the cabinet looks "f***in fantastic!" How's the building going?? And have you tried bending that wooden steering wheel yet? Did the Mrs love the CD cabinet, or does she still think it belongs in your Austin Powers shed?
Keep in touch with the forum, it'll be good to see any new projects, and some of your turning too.

The course sounds brilliant (I checked out the website too). I would love to do it but I live in Brisbane and work full time unfortunately.
