Default What surface to glue timber board on. Strentgh of joint?

    GDay all

I got some Western cedar doors today, ripped apart and thicknesses to about 35mm.

The resulting timber is not quite wide enough for what I have in mind so wish to glue 2 pieces together.

I have glue, clamps etc. Just wondering what surface I should do them on.

Any squeezed out glue will stick to the bench top.

I will be putting through the thickneser again once done.

I am thinking "baking paper". I havent a clue. lols

I am also concerned with the glue strength. I am making a desktop item which will have a 7mm ply base

    Something similar to this.

I've found that baking paper works, plus a sharp chisel or plane afterwards. My last glue up with squeeze out was with plywood, and I just put the glue up bits on top of the waste bits. A heat gun will dissolve pva pretty quickly, with that in mind you can pretty much glue up on any surface you want.

A length of packing tape along the join, fold the join open, apply glue, close, clamp, done.

+1 for baking paper, but freezer wrap is even better (doesn't rip). The other thing I use is a sheet of granite - great for flatness as well as non-stick.

I've got a sheet of thickish glass that I found in a skip. I do all my finishing and small glue ups on it. Cleans off with a scraper. Plus it is dead flat.
