Suspension bridge decking
I am building a suspension foot bridge 21 metres wide and am looking for suggestions for the decking.
It will be supported by 2 or 3 steel cables.
I have considered 4-5" Treated pine posts drilled through and then threaded on the cables or alternatively 200x50 cypress sleeper slabs. I would be inclined to trench the underside of the slabs then screw some keepers on so the slabs don't lift off the cables

Bob,
I assume your bridge is 21M LONG and maybe 2-3M wide? (21M wide, you could drive a few lanes of traffic over it ). The sleeper idea sounds better because:
1) the round pine poles will want to split from the hole drilled through them.
2) half round decking is not the most stable or comfortable of walking surfaces
3) If you ever need to replace one board/round, you will need to partially dismantle your bridge in order to remove and replace it.
Post some pics when you're done, sounds interesting!

Echnidna,
Why don't you just 'borrow' some of the bits of the Otway Fly?
They probably wont miss them.
Ben.

Bob, There's been some pretty spectacular failures on some tree top walks and stuff over here in the west. All from treated pine splitting. One I know now uses hardwood.

As you can see from the pic Its only going to be a footbridge about 1.2m wide and about 6ft high.
There will be 2 steel cables at 900cts. Might put another cable in between. 35mm pine is ok for 900 spans so 50mm would span further but at 450 cts I couldnt foresee safety problems. And I am old fashioned and always discard timber with defects.
If this bridge (which is not very high) is a success I might think about sticking one through the treetops over the creek.
