Default Switching from pine to red oak

The puppy I got a few months ago decided to use my desk as a giant chew toy. Now that he's past that stage I want to build a new one. This one is made of all pine. I would like to use red oak for the new one and it'll be the first time using this type of wood for anything. I used 2x4's as the legs on this old one. I was wondering if I could replace those with 1x4 or 1x6 on the new one. There would be eight in total, four on each side. The desk will be 7' long. I will be using the rockler beadlock system to put everything together. Also if there's any concern about how much weight is on the desk at any time, it's minimal. Nothing heavy is on the desk itself, I have my momitors wall mounted. I do have under desk areas on each side, one holds my computer and the other side is my printer and other random stuff. So will a 1 by work instead of a 2 by?

    Hi mate,
Not sure if you realise you have joined an Aussie based forum. Welcome and hopefully someone will chime in with some advice.
What part of Pa are you in as I used to live in West Chester/ Kennett Square.
    Rgds,
    Crocy.
