Thread: Best place in Sydney to buy straight timber?

If you are looking to buy straight timber, don't even bother looking in Bunnings. Have you tried any of the big timber companies? They should have what you need. Use to be a big one at Seven Hills. not sure if it is still there or not. I am sure someone will know. I think it was called Transilvania timbers or Transvania timbers or something like that.

If I was making drawers for a 4wd, I would use quality plywood rather than solid timber.

Quality ply will be flat with straight edges and square corners. Depending on construction method and the type of slides you use, the drawers will be just as strong as using sold timber and should be more suitable for off-road 4wd driving than solid timber.

And I would buy the plywood from a specialist plywood dealer. Use Google to find one in your area. There are a number of them around including places like Mister Plywood.

Go with the plywood - very stable especially if you have AC in the 4WD.

Consider this, drive for a few hours, in summer with the AC on, then you park for lunch, close up, lock up for a while, then come back and drive off with the AC on. There will be little effect on the ply but solid timber will be constantly moving.

In your situation I would be considering form ply as it is waterproof and dimensionally stable.

There are 2 places on both sides at the start of the bus T way at Northmead (in front of the Coca Cola factory) - one used to be called I think Transalvanian timber, but they specialise in Tassie oak (I haven't been there for 3 years), but I can still see them when I take the bus. The only catch is they only open Mon to Fri. I've just noticed there is another timber place also at the start of the T Way, on the other side. Might check it out tomorrow to see if they are open on sat.
Pity we have to work 5 days a week to be able to buy timber, might have to take a sickie to check them out.
There's one other place along the north side of the railway track between Wentworthville and Pendle Hill train stations - thats open on Sat morn. I bought some meranti from there, but found it was a bit expensive.

transalvanian was at seven hills they closed a good 5 years ago, the place at northmean was called finewood but is now a yard selling framing timbers.

haper timbers is now only at pendle hill not at wentworthvile for last 4 years or so.

The only ones I know of are closer to the coast ie North Shore Timber in Chatswood
and Hudsons in Artarmon (Now Artarmon Timber and Boards)

North Shore will let you check for a nice piece, when they aren't too busy

The place you are referring to is a bit more complex than that, there are at least 3 different companies at the same place, one sells framing timber, another some timber flooring and another one called ATS is specialized in Tassie Oak and Jarrah. If interested in the latter, the person to speak with is Richard. The phone number I have for them is 96305349. I bought a truckload of tassie oak and jarrah last week (and i have been buying from there for few years now), quality is good... My last order consisted in 40 meters of 41 by 65 and a fair bit of 115 by 19 all dressed and i am yet to find any wraping in the wood. Pricewise it is quite interesting and the guy is quite open to negotiation.
The place next door doesn't really deal with wood for furniture, they have to order everything and they don't seem too interested in dealing with that... I asked them to find me some timber more than a month ago and am still waiting for them to call back !!! They are more involved in structural timber.
This said, for the problem at hand, i'd use some ply for the drawers in the 4 wheels drive. can even find some nice veneered ply...

You should go for plywood. There is always movement in solid timber. I doubt you will ever buy a piece of wood perfectly flat and straight anywhere.

NST has a thornleigh store as well - I often use them to get bits and pieces from. Bit closer to Castle Hill as well.

I've also found Harper Timber at Pendle hill to be pretty reasonable too. i think it's about a 20 min run from Castle Hill.

I'd definitely go for ply for your job. (Mr. Ply & Wood at Hornsby are pretty good), but as mentioned, there is Thornleigh Timber & Hardware in Chilvers Rd., who also have ply, or Hornsby Timber & Hardware in James St.
