    Default Table Saw Fence Advice

    Hi WWF,

I have a CarbaTec CTJ-650 10" Contractors Saw. It seems to be a fairly reasonable saw - better then I will ever be I suspect.

i am thinking a fence upgrade is in order. I am looking for advice on what to consider. Not really sure where to start

Perhaps you need to change the thread title to a table saw fence not a bandsaw fence

Why do you think you need an upgrade?

Carbatec have the Biesemeyer Style as an after market fence but at $330 odd it is a far portion of the original price of your saw.
If you really want to splash out go for an Incra Table Saw Systems (much more than $330).

Other than that occasionally members who upgrade to the Incra and the like offer their old fences for sale so it would be worth keeping an eye out.

    Default Whoops

Thanks sir stinkalot, too many beers I am afraid and the fact I pick my new bandsaw up tomorrow

i guess I am thinking a new fence is in order as my projects never seem perfect in terms of the cuts. Happy to be told it is user error and I just need to keep practicing

I have the same type of fence, and find it pretty good. Have you adjusted it to make sure it's parallel to the blade? Check it by raising the blade fully, then measuring from the front & back of the blade to the fence with a vernier. You can adjust the angle of the fence with two grub screws on the vertical surface of the angle piece that sits between the track and the table. Some people say there should be a slight angle, but I always try to keep the fence parallel.
Similarly, the angle between the fence and the table is adjusted by two nylon screws on the horizontal surface of the angle piece. Once set, you should check it every so often, maybe when you start to see excessive saw marks when ripping.

Yes I have the same TS and after tuning the fence it is OK,not a lot of detail in the manual so look for the varios adjustment.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

I am looking for a few more opinions please. I find there is a fair bit of movement in the fence when you apply a little force. Are the reviewers above making furniture or other things that don't require the same level of accuracy?

i had considered the Incra fence however I came to the conclusion that a table saw upgrade would be a better option then spending $800 on a fence. I don't have $800 so nether an option at the moment.

    Default Guidance Please

As the table saw is arguable the most important tool in a wood workers man cave I am little perplexed on the lack of guidance provided by WWF members. Surely there is more wisdom out there to be shared!

    Summary thus far:
    - the current fence is lacking if precision is required. I get a couple of mm movement at the rear of the fence when I apply any lateral force.
    - I am prepared to part with about $300
    - ideally I would like to be able to use the fence on any table upgrade I may purchase in the future
    - Biesemeyer style fences appear to be the way to go. The only one I appear to be able to find for sale in Sydney is the Carbatec one - Carba-Tec Heavy Duty Tablesaw Fence : CARBA-TEC
    - I am travelling to the US at the end of October for work so also looking at options of picking one up there and bringing back with me.

Sorry, when I had a quick look at the pic of the CTJ650 I thought it had a biesemeyer style fence, but it seems it doesn't.
That is the best type of fence, and should be worth the money. You really do need the accuracy.

AlexS do you have the Carbatec one? And what type of saw have you put it on?

I have the TSC10HB, which comes with a Biesemeyer style fence. No problems, easy to adjust if necessary.
