table saw / orbital launcher

Hello All,
Up until about 2 years ago, I primarily focused on the construction side of wood working (decks, spiral stairs, etc). In the last 18-20 months I have turned to wood turning as a hobby / stress reliever.
Now I have owned my table saw for about 12 years. I'v had kicks, but never a real violent one. In the last month I have launched 2 wooden missiles into orbit and had one launch that sent the jig into my chest and cracked 3 ribs.

I assume the stock is getting squeezed on the back end of the blade (new blade old fence).

Does any one have a sled plan for a table saw that will allow both a miter and blade angle cut? I am attempting to cut staves for several plans that require both angles to be adjustable. I can adjust the blade angle mechanically and is accurate to 0.01 degrees. So far the sleds I'v attempted have tried to kill me

Needless to say, for the 1st time in many years, I'm actually kinda afraid of my equipment

Wow Worzi,

That is one scary story, not to mention painful. You've got me cringing just reading it. Sorry to hear about that.

Don't own a table saw so can't help re the sled. Am sure there are others here that use them though. I guess there are many people away for holidays so you might have a bit of a wait for members to return with some answers.

The compound sled looks similiar to one I was using. Have you used any of these? I had'nt seen the others though, will give them a try.

Things I have found that make a table saw launch stuff are: blade mitre slot not parallel (although that generally just gives you an out of sqaure cut) but when combined with the other things doesn't help. The biggest one though is having the fence out of parallel with the blade, ie closer at the back of the blade than at the front. As you feed the timber though it gets pinched between the blade and the fence and has no option but to launch or stall the saw, depending on the piece and the motor strength. Also trying to freehand a piece through the blade with out a fence or jig is a sure way to get a launch. Cutting a piece of timber that is wider than it is long with the fence is not that good an idea as the piece can tend to "walk" and jam. As if that isn't enough.... I launched an offcut 20 metres with an old rattly table saw that vibrated so much that the offcuts would jiggle onto the blade and disappear in a flash (good reason not to stand directly in front of the blade). Keeping all adjustments and blades in top condition is with out question neccessary and sensible too. If you have to force it... you shouldn't be doing it. I'm sure there are other things too.
