    Default Table queries

Hi all. I have this beaut old dining table of 1350 dia which i`d like to freshen up as opposed to restore. It has numerous scratches, the deepest about 1mm on the top & around the 60mm edge.Is there an epoxy or filler that i might use to lessen the depth of scratches?
That being the case, what product (oil/varnish/stain) is recommended to give a uniform look over all? No idea of type of wood so what grades of paper to use? Many thanks.

    Hi Oldgrain

I strongly suspect that your table is veneer
I can't tell what the finish is but you might as well work on the premise that the top has lots of silicone in it from being rubbed over with Mr Sheen over the years

I suggest a good clean with mild soapy water and a new plastic scourer
wipe dry and leave for a day or two

The scratches can then be filled with either a wax stick or a shellac stick
wax sticks Wax Filler Sticks - Lee Valley Tools
shellac sticks Lacquer Sticks - Lee Valley Tools
I'm sure both sort of product are availabe in Australia, probably from Carbatech.

You may then find that the table has been freshened up enough for your purposes

Hi Ian. Yes it is veneered as there`s an ever so small lifting of the venneer along where that thin 4mm ring of timber meets the wider outer band.I will try to insert a glue for my own peace of mind in any case. As for freshening it up I`ll take on board your answers.Once applied do you think the top would need sanding or just an oil to hide the effects of the sticks? Many thanks. Gordon

    Hi Gordon

I suspect your table has a relatively hard lacquer or polyurathane finish

sanding back to bare timber is IMO never a good idea with veneer. The risk of sanding through is too great.
after a a good clean and the scratch repair I'd be inclined to try either the sponsor's EEE Ultra Shine or a cutting type car polish
