Table Repair and Piano Stool
Just bought an old pine colonial dining table. My guess built in the seventies. Plan to use it in our kitchen. There is a crack in the top on one edge where someone has dropped something on it. The crack is about 40mm from the edge and about 300mm long. I am thinking to wedge the crack open, feed in some glue then dowel it in three or four places (the dowells will be visible along the edge).
Is this a good method, and what sort of adhesive to use? Also is there a good wood filler which would stand up to daily use?
Finally (I know a lot of questions) I have to repair a piano stool where the dowells in the legs are all loose. What sort of glues, and do I pull the dowells out even the firm ones (it is almost in pieces now!) and re-glue them too?

Since the dowels are going to be visible, why not make a feature of the repair by holding it together with butterfly dovetails. With an antigued finish, your Colonial table will have a lot of character.

Here is a picture plus jig for butterfly dovetails (or butterfly keys). It comes out of FWW, October 1995.
