    Default Tablesaw Blade Sharpening

    Hi all.

Can anyone recommend a tablesaw blade sharpener in or around the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. I just found my guy in Springvale is no longer there!

    Cheers.

Obviously I can't recommend anyone due to geography. However there are a few things to consider.
In a conversation with the owner of a saw sharpening service about 15+ years ago I received quite an education.

His machine which is capable of sharpening the complex geometry of Forrest blades cost over $25,000 about 5 years previously. Today I would guess that the cost would be well over $100,000.

He tries to sort the blades by brand and type of cut to minimize set up time on the machine. It is better to do a batch all at once and minimize set up time.

He still has difficulty doing Forrest blades and retaining the original geometry. Even with his state of the art machine, Forrest blades are a 2 step process.

He warned that there are people out there that bought machines 20 or 30 years previously that are operating out of their garage. These machines are capable of sharpening saw blades but put a generic grind on the teeth but the original geometry is lost. Few of these garage operations can replace missing or severely chipped teeth.

I had a blade that I used mainly to cut Melamine sheets. Although it was a combination blade it gave superb cuts in Melamine with no chipped edges. Before the conversation I gave the blade to a local hardware/woodworking store to be sharpened. The blade came back sharpened but the original geometry was destroyed. My dream blade for Melamine is now just a woodworking blade. Obviously the blade was sent to a garage type operation. An expensive lesson.

AKE Salestech in Mentone, behind the airport (ignore their website that says Cheltenham, it's an old address, google has the right one)

I was in there a couple of years ago and they had just commissioned a brand new CNC grinding machine, looked very fancy. They can also resharpen diamond tipped tools if you feel like splashing out

Had a similar experience to Rrich, except that the geometry of the blade wasn't even anything special. Went to a new place that was closer than the ones I usually used, and the geometry was quite different to that etched on the blade.

The main thing is to find a specialist place that's recommended by those who have a lot of blades sharpened.

Thanks everyone. Jalor has also been recommended to me elsewhere. I'll give them a go on my spare blade first!

I’ll also recommend Jalor as well, whilst I haven’t personally used them myself, I’ve often dropped and picked up blades, jointer and thicknesser knives for various businesses and they all highly recommend them.

I recently had a 12" 96 tooth blade sharpened for $49 by Leuco at 96 Malcolm Rd Braeside. I'm no expert but they have very modern looking equipment.

That must be the going price as I just had a 28 tooth rip blade sharpened for $15 so roughly 0.50c per tooth. Amazing how you don't realise how blunt a blade is getting until you get it sharpened.

I use these guys: Ace Saw Sharpening.
233 Governor Rd, Braeside VIC 3195

I've had TS blades, router bits and chisels brought back to good from these guys. I've even had a dado set rebored from 5/8 to 30mm for a previous TS and then got them to make an adaptor washer to go back the other way for the SStop.

    Cheers
