    Default Taking the plunge

Well, I have been reading different woodworking forums, buying woodworking magazines, and recording woodworking tv shows for a while now and it is time to take the plunge. Tomorrow we are going to buy a table saw, planner, compound miter saw, and a bandsaw. A jointer is to follow shortly. I have never made a piece of furniture in my life. I am sure there will be disasters, uh-ohs, and the like but I hope to learn well and become good at what seems like to be a rewarding craft.

Yall have a good site here.

That's exactly what I did 4.5 years ago and am loving it. Buying 5 machines in 1 day was fun.

Don't forget to buy quality tools.

    Good luck and have fun.

Welcome to mad house. A suggestion, start on the small side, coffee table size to learn about your new machines, techniques and wood. Good luck and the search facility is easy to use here.

    Good stuff.

I've been in the trade since I left school and only within the couple of years have I acquired my own powertools/machinery.

Might I recommend holding off on the bandsaw and getting the jointer, as the jointer and planner/thicknesser really do go hand in hand. The jointer squares and straightens the stock and the thicknesser/planner planes it to the right size.

Theres a wealth of knowledge here, and I'm sure you'll pick it up in no time at all. If your stuck on something all you need to do is ask here and someones surely able to help you out.

    Goodluck
