    Default Tambour Doors

    Good Morning All

Has anyone any first hand experience - good, bad or indifferent - in routing tambour doors such as these, or similar, or alternative:
    www.amanatool.com/tambour

I am collecting information for a new kitchen and am considering them for appliances hutches.

    Thanks

    Graeme

Try Stusshed, I am sure he talked about his experience with them some time ago.
Also look here on the forums, Wolfie discussed their experiences a while ago.

    Thanks Mal

Wolfie's got me worried when he suggests that one should read the instructions....

Stu's just reported an interesting adv - have asked him if he went further.

    Anyone else tried Amana???

    Cheers

Well I just ordered this tabour set from the US for $156.34 plus $11 postage, you know with the Aust $ doing so well. I'll let you all know if the destructions have got any better, but their will be no review of their performance as router bits as I'm getting them for a job much later on.

I remember Rocker made a beautiful tas blackwood rolltop desk using those or similar router bits.

Here's the WIP for his desk and the finished desk thread

By a remarkable coincidence I'm making a tambour door breadbox this weekend; the traditional way ie with the slats glued to a canvas backing cloth. I intend to make them "D" section 19mm wide, 6mm thick with either a 1/16" or 1/8" roundover. I suppose I'd better take some pictures!

I like the idea of the Amanatool cutters but the slats need to be 1/2" thick; probably ideal for a kitchen appliance hutch but way too chunky for my needs.

    Good Morning Super

Yeah, I saw that adv too; next month the Aus$ might be $1.10 !!! How can you not try them as soon as they arrive?

    Cheers

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Wendy.

I searched but missed these threads. Whenever I see reports like this I get such mixed emotions - envy, fear, challenged.

Really great work and Rocker did it the hard way using standard router bits rather than a purpose-designed set - perhaps Amana had yet to produce their stuff? If I can do something half as good as Rocker then I shall be very pleased.

    Cheers

Well my tambour bits arrived on Friday and I must say I'm pleased with them. I checked out the destructions and as far as I'm concerned they are fine and easy to follow. I did read them twice and I can find no reason why anyone would have a problem. Maybe it's the extra sheet that comes with it reproduced from Woodsmith (US version). I have not looked at the DVD that also comes with the bits.

I have this set of bits. They work really well but the DVD that comes with it does not give much information. The timber gets milled to 50mm x 12mm, I mill it to 55mm x 12mm to give myself a little extra to hold onto. It's a good time to buy right now, as the Aussie dollar is doing so well.
