    Default small tape measure

I went to Bunnings this morning. I don't know why, they never seem to have what I want, but for some reason I keep going there. I must be a masochist or something. I should just stay home and bang my head against the brick wall.

Anyway on the way out I found a palletload of these sitting by the registers:

I thought for the sake of $4.50 (the 50c piece is the change, not part of the purchase) I will take one home. its 2m long and that's the part of the longer measures that you tend to use more than 90% of the time and it fits in my pocket without trying to pull my pants down.

The quality seems to be there but it is a bit tight pulling out the last 200mm of tape, possibly as a result of trying to make it as small as possible.

This was at Bunnings Hoppers Crossing but I would expect that all stores would have them.

(usual disclaimer: I do not work for bunnings and never will and have no other affinity with them except as a (usually disgruntled) customer)

    Cheers

    Doug

Yep the smaller tape measure is a good idea.

And made by a very strong and well established company.

    Hi Doug,

Just make sure it's not an Imperial or Logarithmic 2 metre tape. That could be why they were cheap.

    Regards,

    Rob

Its all good, definitely metric. I still would have gotten it if it batted both ways.

There are people here that would kill for an Imperial one.

I got one about 2 or 3 months ago - Qld must get the deliveries from China sooner..

I've had small key-ring tapes for many years, they seem to pop up on counters and near checkouts in hardware stores from time to time. This tape is a bit bulkier than the last one (which is no use because the plastic eye wore through ), but it's 2M, & the old one was only 1M, so I guess it's swings & roundabouts....

    Cheers,
    IW

    Could I make a suggestion……...

Take a board of known measurement [using your usual measuring tools].

Mark the board at set intervals e.g., 100mm, 250mm, 400mm etc.

Then check it with the new tape, rule etc.

I have been caught out with cheapies before - the measurements either intervals or overall or both will be different.

Unfortunately I have found discrepancies of up to 10mm. May not seem like much but if you are short/long when building something special it can be a PIA.

I learned a long time ago to ensure I used the same tape/rule for all measurements or if I had to use different measuring tools to have at least calibrated them together first - even the same brands are not immune of this problem e.g. a 5m and 8m tape or a 300mm and 1m steel rule from the same manufacturer.

    Check out your measuring tools.
