Default How much to taper legs

Working on a federal style table, which typically has square legs tapered on all four sides. I've seen some plans that have the legs tapering to about 50% of their thickness, and some to about 2/3.

So, for example, if the legs start at 36mm square at the top, should I taper to 18mm square at the bottom, or 24mm square?

The legs will be 800mm long, with the taper starting at about 130mm from the top.

    Thanks.

    Tex

I reckon a taper to about 24mm square would be fine. Don't forget that it will be accentuatedas you look down. To some extent, it depends on the size & appearance of the table - will the legs look too heavy or too light?

The dining tables that I have done in the past have 70x70mm legs and are tapered by only 10mm or so, I reckon any more makes them look funny.

I only taper on the outside corner too.

    Al,

Eccentric as always Surely the traditional method is to taper the inside corner.

Generally a 70mm leg will taper to 50mm for good proportion. 10mm would look odd as its neither here nor there.

I agree with Rocker. Tapering only the outside would look stupid

Getting back to Tex's original question, I think a taper to about half the width of the top of the leg is about right for the Federal style. I made a card table in that style, following a plan in FWW. See https://www.woodworkforums.com/f187/demi-lune-jarrah-folding-card-table-25041 . The legs of that table taper from 43 mm at the top to 23 mm at the bottom.

Many thanks. As usual, several ways to approach it and no general rule. Guess I'll play around and see what looks right.

    Regards,
