    Default tapering legs on a jointer

    refer also to the earlier thread....
    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f11/ha...before-107592/

    I'm sorry that it has taken so long but I am finally back on to the SECRET PROJECT and have attached pics of the first 'production' leg

    DESIGN
    each SECRET PROJECT has 4 legs and these are tapered on the inner faces only

    MATERIAL
    some of my Australian Red Cedar from Coffs Harbour, NSW (thanks Underfoot, Wheelinround and SIL Ben}
    50 x 50 x 950

    METHOD
    fit a stop block onto the infeed table so that the beginning of the taper aligns with the contact point on the cutter
    lower the infeed table to make a 3mm depth of cutter
    this leg had 4 passes on each tapered face over the whole tapered length
    set a stop block on the out feed table so that the length of the foot does not pass over the cutter
    this leg had 2 passes on each tapered face with the infeed lowered a further 3 mm for each pass on each face. you could certainly do more passes on a lesser depth of cut to get the surface finish required

    SAFETY
    there was no unusual 'snatching' at the timber and the whole process was very tame, the only additional safety concern was moving the guard out of the way to lower the leg onto the cutter but I pushed the guard out of the way with the leg before lowering it onto the cutterhead

    FINISH
    I would normally cut all of the mortices etc before tapering so this leg has had a cursory sanding and a slapped on coat of shellac only
