Thread: What to teach kids

I just helped an eleven year old make a tool box..simple designs and then he made a gun rack. Using a sliding mitre saw and scroll saw. He practice cutting out his name with the scroll saw before attempting the curves in red cedar for the gun rack. His only mishap was on the table top sander knocking his finger. Funnily enough, the first thing my 6yo granddaughter wanted to do was sand. Fine by me, and she's actually more patient than I am. Also, she's now pretty good on the scroll saw, the only power tool she's allowed to use. Also a great extra pair of hands during glue-ups.

Is at least one parent going to be involve with them in the class? That would make it nice and they could practice or at least talk about it at home. You might turn some dad or mom into wanting to take it all further. Good for you for doing it. I always wanted to have some young kid, that would adopt me as a Grandpa and I could have them in the shop sometimes to teach. It would be great, then I think of the liabilities and scare myself off.

If you are going to let them use tools, at least get the parent(s) to sign a release form. Well, maybe people in Africa are not as sue crazy as they are in the U.S.

Not sue crazy over here but a signed idemnity is a must. All schools have them. Got one ready in draft form.
Getting parents involved is another thought. Especially some of the mommies
