Default Can someone tell me the name of this material?

    Hey Guys,

I have been searching and searching though I cannot seem to find the name of the material shown in the attachment. It seems like a dense rubber or foam ply, It is light weight and relatively hard. Does any one know?
    Thanks

Looks like sound insulation a dens foam impregnated with lead is what it used to be these days maybe impregnated with something else. Try searching for sandwich foam

From the limited info you provide in the pic, I suspect that it might be similar to Cowdroy NEMA, a plastc sheet substitute for MDF/Chipboard. However my experience of NEMA is limited to light colours and they specifically recommend against painting it dark colours because of heat absorbtion in exposed situations so I doubt that they supply a dark colour. Still might be a usefull lead however.

Thanks for the replies so far. The only other info I can give you is that in this instance it has been used in a sign, there is a thin laminate on either side with the branding on the laminate. To me it seems like some type of synthetic light weight replacement for ply

When I get stuck with a problem like yours, instead of seaching the net for hours on end, and getting nowhere, or totally and hoplessly lost, or confused, etc.,( or all of the above ), I have learnt to simply contact a major plastics supplier, and pick their brains as to what the product is. 99 times out of a 100, I do get an answer even if it means me having to send a photo or two, by email, or a sample to them via snail mail. same applies when I occasionally come across a piece of timber that I have no idea as to what it is,- simply contact a well-known specialist timber supplier, and i receive an answer back pronto,- well within a day or two anyway.
    Hope this helps you,
    Roger

It's hard to tell from the photo but my guess is its similar to the foam core used for boat building, its technical name has escaped me but i know it is available in lots of various densitys, not sure why its black though, maybe treated so the UV's don't attack it. That's my guess and I'm sticking to it!

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

It is more like a plastic laminate. The plastic laminate has the branding on it.
