test remington rifle stock
i have laminated up some marine ply to get a good feel for stock making, without ruining some of the realy nice walnut that i have got.
i rough shaped and inletted over the last couple afternoons, been so bloody busy with work i have not had alot of oppourtunities to work on it but so far it looks quite good.
the inletting
havent got the action out yet as i need to finish the bbl channel and take a little more out of the inletting to fit it properly, mite work on it this weekend.
i have picked up some alloy pillars so i am thinking i mite pillar bed this and see how it shoots.

Hey Greg,
If you can get a stock like that, why even bother doing one in Walnut??? too bad you're a Molly Duker (Left Handed) that stock would sell at the local Rifle Club in two minutes I reckon.
Great Job

As far as the patterning goes it looks great, but I doubt that the ply would hold up to the pressures of being a serious gunstock. There would be far to many areas that could fail IMHO.
Much better to use it as a blank and test pattern before using the walnut.
I will watch this thread with interest once the walnut starts being used.

Are you a target shooter or do you go bush? You have some big game up the top. A lot more interesting than down this way although pigs, deer, goats etc are comming in closer all the time.

yea both, this rifle is the ultimate cross dresser, this is its 4th stock, the original plastic rubish got used for a template, i have a mahogany stock that i have inlet a floor plate kit to acept 10 shot AI mags for hunting, it is the same set up in the blue laminate stock in the photo above, thats it in its "range princess" stock.
now this one is just because i wanted to give it something else, and a bit of practice.
completed the barrel channel and inlet today so i will do the forend tommorrow if i get time then fit a recoil pad and pillar bed it, see how it gos then

sorry Geoff, i skipped over your post without seeing it,
tbh i glued up the ply for use as a template but after seeing it i thaught i would go all out and see if i can make a shooter out of it, if i wreck it it dosent realy matter as i have other stocks, and it is all practice before i start on the walnut i have.
i am waiting on bedding compound, pillars, recoil pads, etc before i can finish it and start another anyway

What bedding compound do you use, Greg? The bloke I made this stock for makes a compound, you can get in touch with him at Adhesive Engineering.

pillars are turned from alloy billots and the bedding i use is devcon, it is one of those things where there are plenty of diferent products so if you are happy with it then so be it, i quite like the devcon but it is expencive, much cheaper overseas, unfortunatly.

Like the coloured laminates.
What was your main shaping tool for your test stock?

a router in a 3d pantograph to rough shape the stock, dremil to finish the inletting, and a barrel channel tool from brownells for the barrel channel. then just the usual sandpaper etc, for finishing.
i am thinking of trying a stippled finish for the grip instead of checkering,as anyone who knows checkering is very time consuming, and i was just after a faster but still practical option.
i am waiting on some more bits before i can go any further, recoil pad, alloy pillars bedding compound etc............
so it will be a while before i can test it out.
