I reckon those corner bits you have there will pop the glue line, you've got 2 opposing faces expanding and shrinking there.

So has the MIL noticed her stairs are missing yet? (or are you hoping she'll fall down the stairwell)

    Default Blaclbutt table.

I looked at an enlarged picture and I have to agree with Bob. it would be a great pity if this does happen.
Otherwise a fine piece of work.

Is there a way to work around that. Like making sure the timber is at a low moisture content or having a buffer material that would move easier. Maybe some kind of wood that "stretches".

Tweedledum I thnk it looks great but needs more pictures taken of it.

Default re mum in laws set s table

As a neophite member, I was aghast at the number of people who replied to my little 'quirk' at a fellow tweed member. The steps used for the table were at least 40 years old and i used a double biscuit size 20 offset joining at the corner and at the centre design. I used techna glue to give me added insurance of a reliable joint. I thank you all for your comments and will endeavour to add more photos soon ..today as I listen to the cricket..The table was given to my daughter..as she loved her grandma.. it comfortably seats eight and is over 2metes long and nearly 900 wide

The top attachment plates don't appear to have any allowance for expansion, or have I missed it?

(don't want your top breaking the base when it gets humid)

As in the holes in the top plates need to be elongated

Default the raw material for mil's stairs table

I have put together a few photos to try to explain how raw the material was when I started on this my first table.. a fantasy arising out of sentiment for the steps my Mm in law had trodden over for over 40 years.and the desire of my daughter to have a table that wasn't too polished but functional using the discarded steps. In the designing process I made use of the bolt holes as a design feature , turning red jarrah pegs and placing the steps accordingly to allow some kind of pattern. The photos show the steps in their very early stages of preparation with all their hidden flaws..even the final photo with legs attached is not complete at that time ..burn marks and finish to be done on top and on legs, Try to put them together to make the story of this table as I have not put them in correct order..finally I have included a photo of the cramped workshop.. my shed where this nightmare started and gained fruition.Note that the pieces had not been clamped or joined at this stage of photo-ing.. Hope this helps

Sorry, but no, I don't see it. On a long table like that I was looking for a slot at least 10mm long to let the screws slide without jamming and cracking the timber. But if you have allowed for it then it should be fine
