Yeah, well whatever you say about the timber BUT, the important thing is what thicknesser and how did it perform. Should we all buy one - or not!!

New thicknesser model CTJ381
Yes Hitch
The machine works really well, and after spending a day setting up the infeed and outfeed table it's spot on accurate to less than 0.125 mm Im happy with that.
The timber I put through was as hard as, and it just ate it up
although god knows what timber it is. I would like to get a set of blades HSS and tungsten but that will be later and maybe a metal detector, you can get them a lot cheaper on ebay I belive, but thats in the furture, anyway I am happy with the machine although it took me a day to set it up cleaning excreta.
regards colbra
PS what sort of timber do you think it might be?

Thanks Colbra. Sounds like a good machine and you are really satisfied with it. I don't have a thicknesser but gleaning as much info as possible toward a purchase when I move to my new shed in Tas in about 18 months time. I simply don't have enough space now. A thicknesser, jointer, good dust collection system and possibly a upgraded saw table are on the potential shopping list for that time.
With regard to your timber I simply don't have sufficient knowledge or experience at this stage to express an opinion. All I can say for now is that it looks good and a piece I would like to work with,
This is a great forum but sometimes I feel like I am sucking far more info and learning out of it than I will ever be able to contribute - but I'll keep trying.

Hi Hitch,
Don't worry about that mate, your with a great bunch of like minded people, that I have found only to happy to help you out, and if my knowledge base was as big as my tool collection! I would be a master cabnet maker, and I can assure you thats something I am not, and never will be! but I am having the time of my life with all these people on this site Regards colbra

Colbra,
The new thicknesser must be ok to dress old hardwood that wide.
I reckon the wood is Sydney Bluegum also. I got some old recycled bluegum last year and it looks the same. My elchepo thicknesser (don't laugh it's an ozito) required a helping hand with it as the feed rollers slipped a bit. The cutter had the grunt to cut but I had to push the board now and then. The boards were about 9'' wide. I have done the same size Tas oak and cherry with no problems.
Regards
John

Doesnt look red enough to be SBG and "yes my monitor is calibrated", is it waxy(does it slide against itself easily)?
Possibly could be a stringy bark?....................................................................

If it was bought here on the coast pre bunnings and mass distribution of other timbers. it was most likely milled here.
My guess would be Blue Gum too.
right colour for a freshly dressed peice. with seeing in the flesh.
I based this guess on grain pattern, origin, and colour.
nice to see the machine working!Steven Thomas
