Im looking at a young guy starting out so please dont think Im trying to put you off. But lets look at your idea. If you create a table of contrasting woods, it will be the table you want to look at not your display. So please think again, do you want to display a table or something else.

To be clear; you need to make a table for a school assessment, correct? Does the assessment require that you use contrasting timbers?

No what I tried to say is what is your objective in your creation. To take to extremes let us assume you made an exquisit table with inlays etc. Then on top of that plonked a plastic statue of Buzz Lightyear. What is my focus of attention. If you create for a purpose you must add to that purpose, not have a clash with what it is.

ok well you got my design wrong the table will have a glass panel (display table) and i will place the model cars inside a compartment so the models are mot taking the eye away from the natural beauty of the timbers

Your best bet is to see your local timber merchant.
He will be able to supply you with what you need at a price to suit your budget. It would help if you have a drawing/plan of what you are building to help them help you.
Another thing to note is that 6mm toughened glass is not cheap, any bevels or edge polishing adds significantly to the cost..

G'day Grant and welcome to the cubby.
I still think you are missing rrobor's point.
I think your idea for the table is very sound but, might I suggest that you make the table from a single species of good quality, attractive timber.
Save the fancy stuff for another table.

Hi Grantorino,
Firstly I must say the others before make a very valid point so listen to that advice.
But if you choose to go with the contrasting timbers I like jarrah with blackbutt.
Maybe as a compromise, make it mainly one species only, with a small highlight or feature from a contrasting timber.
Whatever you decide it's great that you are getting into woodwork so young- ENJOY.The time we enjoy wasting is not wasted time.
