    Hi gater88er,
It is very hard to tell from 1 photo and I can't get any better size from you're photo but maybe New Guinea rosewood(only a guess) but as I said more photos closer edge and end grain would be helpful, how hard, heavy, how does it work.Usually the thumbnail photo's can be zoomed but not in this case.
    Regards Rod.

I'm still thinking NG rosewood does it have a greasy feel to it when fresh cut/planed. But as I know it is very difficult to identify timber from a photo colour from flash can wash out true look of it. So what do others think.
    Regards Rod.

The grain looks more like blackwood than NG rosewood to me, especially with the 'furry' look around the edges. Blackwood tends to be quite fibrous and stringy.
An endgrain pic would sort it out pretty quickly as they look very different from that angle

Looks just like the blackwood i'm working with at the moment. The background makes it looks a little more greyish but otherwise it's the same. Mine is Tasmanian Blackwood, i think Victorian varieties have a slightly different colour. Looks great when finished but can have difficult alternating grain patterns which can make it hard to plane (without tearout).

Here's some end grain. Hopefully this'll settle it.

Bit out of focus, but that endgrain does look a lot like NG rosewood
