It’s black bean,I’ve tailed hundreds of metres of it out of the thicknesser and moulder for the old man in the 1980’s. Stinks like pepper and hard as buggery.I built my year 12 major work out of it and it still looks magnificent . Tools must be super sharp.

I wanted to hold back my comments to see how the different opinions flowed. Interesting

Yes, it certainly looks like Black Bean to me as well from the pics supplied. This is where authentic reference samples are useful to compare a suspect against. Of course one needs a short list of suspects first. The appearance of a freshly cut (with very sharp tool) end grain, should show similar patterns under a simple 10X hand lens if they are the same. No microscope is required. This serves as reasonable confirmation when complimented with colour, density and odour.

Many Eucs look the same under the 10x lens so suggest using your other senses - consider colour, density and feel (eg for waxy feel) coarsenees of grain etc - all are more useful in comparisons. Most Eucs have the very similar (not distinctive) odours from my experience. Its useful to calculate air dry density too (Mass grams / volume in cubic cm x 1000 = kg / cu m) . Density of most commercial and more common species are published eg in Bootle. Or, does a small sample sink in water?

Anyway, hope these ideas are helpful

    Cheers, Euge

As well as problems with breathing my old man had the whole house floor in black bean and the borers loved the sap on it, shame because it gave the timber a contrasting look.
