    Default What timber is this?

    Hi All,

A friend gave me this piece of timber that came from his late father's collection. He had no idea what it was so I cleaned it up hoping to identify it.

The wood is very dense and heavy, has a cranky grain and eucalyptus type sap. There are signs of borers in the outer edges but the holes are very small, like a pin.

The attached photo shows the outer sap wood on the left and the machined timber on the right. Could it be River Red Gum?

Doesn’t look like any Red Gum that I have. Not sure what it is, however I am sure someone more knowledgeable that me will chime in with the correct answer.

looks too pale for any redgum. Has a burly look about the grain - which is more where it was cut from rather than what it was cut from. WHAT it is -dunno could be many things. Would think not any kinda red gum though.

I hadn't considered a burl. If it is it must have been a big one, the piece is 900mm long
