Default Timber Deck - Do I need to Oil over the Stain??

Approx 8 wks ago I stained our newly built treated pine deck. To me the finish looks dull (stain was a Jarrah colour) and I was wondering if its common to apply oil over a stain - for treated pine?

Does anyone have any recommendations on oil also??

In magazine the decks always look nice and glossy - but I guess they can get this effect by wetting down the decking.

    Cheers LC

I use oil on my back deck and also on all our hardwood timber outdoor furniture.

Given that this consumes vast quantities of oil and the commercial outdoor furniture oil costs a fortune, I make my own. Very simple, half Linseed oil and half mineral turps. Buy a few litres of each.

I found that the first application got sucked up pretty quick, but after a couple it takes far less. Don't know that this will make the deck shiny. I think the appearance problem partly is with the greenish tinge to CCA pine which may skew the Jarrah look after you stained. Beware over oiling as it may get slippery.

I expect you will get many other options put up, but this is probably the most economical.

I've used wattyl decking oil on my hardwood deck. It looks shiny for a few hours, but dulls down a bit after that.

Remember that once you start oiling a deck, you probably have to keep oiling it - but it does keep the timber nice.
