Brisbane timber supplier for dining table project
Hey all, I'm going to build a new dining table and am hoping to use Blackbutt (or similar blonde timber) in roughly 170x35mm, but I've only been able to find decking in 22mm thickness, does anyone know a supplier in Brisbane? recycled would be great, but I don't have a thicknesser or jointer so I'm hoping for square dressed.
Picture of table similar to my project, made by Lumber furniture in Melbourne (where I've found a few suppliers that have exactly what I want, but not worth paying shipping for such a small quantity)
Thanks so much!

Head for Melany 29 April-1 May for the wood show. Plenty of timber to see and suppliers to talk to

If you are keen on recycled then have a look at The Big Red Shed at Darra. They aren't cheap and the wood can have some stray holes but you can select the colour that you like.
For new eucalypt timber I have found Gill and Co at Rocklea to be very helpful. http://gilltimber.com.au/index.php/about-us
You do not need your own machinery to flatten it either. There is a company here in Brisbane (possibly in Richlands I think) that has big machinery that you can hire by the hour. You have to do the heavy lifting so you will need a mate or two, but it is faster than doing it by hand or buying a big machine you do not need. If you are interested I will see if I can find their name (or another forum member like IanW will know as it was a post of Luke Maddux's when he built a workbench with Ian that alterted me to their existence)
Good luck
David

According to the Wood'n'you pamphlet their planer/thicknesser is only to be used with new wood and some hardwoods are not permitted. Hence call them to see what the limitations are before you buy your timber. I assume it is a combination machine.
http://www.woodnyou.com/pamphlet.pdf
The planer/thicknesser is their most expensive machine. It says that machine is $90/hr +GST and there are other charges. However this is billed per minute so if you are well organised, it might work out OK.
It says that you can have your timber delivered directly to them.
If you use these guys, give me a shout and I'll try and come and help you with the lifting. It would give me a chance to learn how everything works, in case I ever decide to use them myself.
Or you could check out you local Mens Shed.
If you discover a way to do it outside of normal business hours, please let me know.
In the meantime, I'm trying to save up to acquire the machines.

I've bought 300mmx38mm blackbutt from Bootle Timber. I think their stock varies a bit but Blackbutt should be fairly easily obtainable. They also carry Vic Ash and American White Oak. Vic Ash can be a bit hit and miss though since there is a lot of color variation. Watts Wood and Mouldings should also have Blackbutt and many other woods in stock. I'm not sure if either of them offer an S4S service though.

Yes, the place we used was 'Woodnyou', in Coopers Plains. They have always been very helpful & accommodating whenever I've been there, and as someone else already said, if you are organised, it doesn't take long to surface & plane a table-top's worth of timber. Even tho' I have my own 300mm combination machine, I go there if I need to plane big stuff. Having an adequate industrial machine to feed heavy timbers to is much easier than battling with home-duty machines trying to punch above their weight, and results are usually superior.
When you have a planer of your own you will understand why they are leery of recycled wood! They used to whack on an extra charge, but I can easily accept that even that may not have covered the expense of having blades resharpened, downtime while they are changed, and shortened life. No matter how thorough I am, a nail can evade detection until I 'find' it with a planer blade, so I only use old worn-out blades for initial passes on anything I'm at all unsure of. Even new wood can spring the odd nasty surprise, especially if it's from backyard trees!
Cheers,IW

Kennedy's Timbers in Narangba have a large selection of recycled timbers and will mill the wood to your specs. The web search just brought up their general info :
Interior Design projects - recycled sustainable hardwood timber
The Brisbane contact info is on that page. Cheers

Thanks Cleokitty, Kennedy's are just down the road and were my first enquiry, but they charge over $200 for machinery setup, the timber for 1 table came to almost $700
