Default Timber/Finish ID to match commission

I've got me my first commission.
In-laws hasked me to make a low coffee table to match these Morris type chairs that they have.

I"m unsure of the timber and finish. I've attached these pictures, any ideas?
I think it's tassie oak, maybe vic ash?

As for the finish, is this what you call liming?
    Cheers,

    Adam

I recently made a hat stand to match a set of "swedish style" furniture. I used 'tassie' oak' which was also labeled as 'mountain ash' and finished it with wattyl 's water based clear gloss finish. The grain and finish looked very close to your photo because the water based finish does not 'yellow' the timber. I seemed to get better results with gloss and then satin as the last coat. Hope this helps, Fletty

    THanks Fletty,

After reading some stuff on here, I'm starting to realise the confusion surrounding "tassie oak". Wattyls stuff is as cheap as chips so I might get a piece of Vic ash and Tassie Oak and see how they come out.

Mother in law will be picky!
    Cheers,

    Adam

Vic Ash, Mountain Ash and Tas Oak can all be one of the same although as pointed out to me Tas Oak can be tighter grained (E.Regnans).
The grain and colour vary considerably, I have a pile in the shed that varies from defined stripes to close grain with little colour variation or pattern.
Have a look in the woodpile when you go out and get the best match you can find.
A plus is it's easy to work and polishes up well, I use cross linked PVA (yellow glue) and to date have not had a joint failure.
