Timber flooring ideas?
We bought a fairly large house (270m2, including the garage though) but the catch is that the whole second floor just has particle board for its flooring. The fun part is that we can do anything we like without having to rip up old carpet, floorboards and skirting board to do it.
We started looking at that Kaindl stuff (laminated tongue and groove flooring) but its $19.95 p/m2 for the cheapest colour options. I've seen pine floorboards for $1 per lineal mtr ($10 p/m2) but they are the non T&G type that are used by the Japanese market. From what I've read, using non tongue & groove can result in buckling. I don't have the machinery to add the T&G to the timber.
Does anyone have any ideas or things you've tried that you're happy with?

Don't know where you are located but have you tried auctions? I bought a couple of packs of floorboards (stringy bark) from a builder who bought several. They are second quality but frankly I like the colour variation and imperfections. When sanded and finished I think they look great.

I also like the look of imperfections. There's nothing wrong with a few knots here and there. Did your flooring timber have tongue and groove on the edge?

Yip, all tongue and grooved. I'll admit to having to work a bit harder to lay the boards as they are not all straight along their length. The slight variations in thickness does not matter as the sanding takes care of that. I used a secret nailer to fire staples into the groove.
I layed them onto OSB ( orientated strand board ) as I covered most the floors this way to enable me to do walls etc. A bead of floor adhesive is what I'd also recommend as it will stop squeaking. That said I do have one squeaky area, not enough glue I expect as the rest is fine.
I'll post a pic if I can work out how to.

It looks amazing - I love all the different colours. That's exactly the kind of look I'd love for our place. And it looks so professional.
When you say you got it an auction, you mean a physical auction rather than an Ebay online auction?

Not fleabay, no. Got stringybark floorboards, blackbutt boards that I milled into weatherboards and all of the timber for stud work, floor joists and some rafters. All hardwood , all reject or seconds. Takes extra effort to make it straight so what you save in materials you loose in labour but DIY or call it sweat equity almost balances it up.
