Default Timber frames in the style of the Australian Impressionists...

I am an artist with a passion for the Australian Impressionists and what they represented early last century. I paint en plein air and am keen to create some frames in the similar style. Below is an example of a timber frame cut from one piece- the only information i can find is redwood. I was thinking of using oregon but was wondering how I could cut the beveled section out with contemporary tools?
    cheers,

    Chisel,
    Small block plane,
Router with bevelled bit and then use a chisel to square off the bevelled corners

Thanks Rod, I think that is the way to go. Just argued with a custom framer about it who swore it was a bevelled frame inside a solid frame. But then i showed him another example with the wood grain running perfectly from the frame into the bevel. He said it must have been machined- it was made in 1889. I guess it's time to sharpen the chisels and get to work.\

What do you think of oregon as a timber for this job? any thoughts on what would be best?
    cheers,

The choice of timber is yours. With oregon (not Australian) is ok but you'll need to select pieces without knots as they can be a challenge to cut without chipping/ripping them out but depends how rustic you want it.

You'll get plenty of others' views on timber choices.

    Good luck

You could try Red Cedar or its Asian cousin Surian.
