    Question Timber Joinery

I have been looking everywhere for the little joinery products that are used to join two pieces of timber together without using glue or nails etc. They are a two piece system (male / female) and use a phillips head screw driver to tighten the female piece. As you tighten it pulls the two pieces of timber together to form a tight joint. These are usually used in cabinets or wall units to give clean invisible joins on the outside.

I would appreciate knowing what they are called and where I could possibly purchase them from within the Brisbane area. I have tried local hardware stores without success.

Hi Carissa, I know the fastener you're thinking about and I've spent the last hour googling for the damn things. I've used them and I think they're a Howard Silver product. Made of of creamy coloured plastic in two pieces m/f and two serrated 'posts' on each half. As you tighted the phillips head screw the two joined pieces are pulled together. Sorry I couldn't find them on the web. If you go into a hardware store and ask the oldest male sales assistant (they know everything) I'm sure you'd get the item you're after.

    Carissa,

Could be a dowel and cam or bolt and cross-dowel you're looking for.

They're called knockdown fittings. Here's an English site I googled up to show you the terms if you're thinking of something else.

    Default Timber Joinery

    Thanks Shedhand
A member called Ivan In OZ actually supplied me with a web site run by HEFEL Furniture Products. I founds them in one of the online catalogs. They are called MiniFix Knock Down Fittings. They come in metal and plastic as you described. Thanks for your efforts. This is a fabulous forum for quick and accurate responses.

Carissa, bunnings carry the plastic versions made by Howard Silvers mentioned by Shedhand, found near the other HS stuff such as cross dowels, connecter bolts, etc.
