Timber Selection

I need some advise on timber selection for a couple of external framed and glazed doors I want to put together
I've priced WRC and an still on the floor.
They will be painted and will resemble (unless the usual SU happens) Stegbar
Section sizes are approx 43x36fin styles and 63x36 T&B rails routed for the glazing beads
I'd like to use recycled if poss but there seems to be less supply in Sydney than I had thought there would be so any suggestions on that would help as well

Ring your local library and ask if they have a copy of the Australian building code or standards for lintel size, The member you're after is a lintel I guess?

Nominal size (150x38) Finish size 140x35.

Personally, I wouldn't use WRC even though it has a supposedly good reputation for durability. I don't know how many rotten stegbar windows I've seen and WRC fences I've seen rotten and eaten by termites (yes termites). Can you source the timber from old silky oak windows or doors from a demo yard? Or if you have to use new timber something durable like Merbau. There is probably a long list of durable recycled Australian h/w available from recycled timber merchants down that way surely.

Sorry but if you’d of just asked for the minimum section size for a top rail of an external glazed door, I might have a better idea what you were trying to say. And maybe I got want you wanted wrong, but my answer still would be the same! (Still on the floor) I believe you meant sill and even if you did, this member is called a threshold when it’s place in a door way. And even now I feel you might have meant the door jamb? If you call member by their correct names people will be able you help you easier! Sorry again for the misunderstanding<O

Mate he meant he is STILL on the floor because of the price of the western red cedar. try reading his question and you'll see its perfectly clear he's talking about window rails and stiles

Curious thing about window/door frames in timber: they were never made out of durable species.

They were meant to be coated with gobs of paint which formed a water tight coating.

In the seventies, we all got this hippy "wood is good" thing happening, and invariably "restoration" which really meant "renovation" involved taking all the finishes off, and back to the natural material, which of course was not the way they were meant to be.

If you are going to properly prime with an oil based primer, and paint with an oil based gloss, pretty much any species of timber will do providing it is stable and straight grained. There are lots of hoop pine doors and windows that have been doing great service for a century or more.

If you don't want to paint them, don't leave them out in the weather, or build them in some other material.

That's pretty much what I suspected (and hoped considering the cost of WRC) so I think I'll look at one of the alternatives suggested

Your comments about WRC are pretty spot on. I have a courtyard that was enclosed with WRC window suites and they are all rotting out from the ground up even though they have been oil primed and painted

Yes I did say doors - glazed doors and I did make a spelling mistake read "am still on the floor" for "an still on the floor" which was a reference to the price of the WRC.
