timber sizes
just need a straight answer. what are the normal manufacutred sizes of timber (jarrah in particular)? i am doing year 12 and need to now so i can finalize my design and now i need to get specific. i am wanting to make my workbench out of 100 x 50 jarrah. not to worried bout cost, that is what holidays are for. lol. but if 100 x 50 is not a normal size what is the closest to it? (90 x 42??). thanks.

Are you after dressed or rough sawn?

There's no standard sizes... only construction grade wood has standardisation.
Sizes stocked at one merchant can be different to the next merchant... depends what they order from the mill, but in saying that its harder and expensive to get stock thicker than 50mm(2")because of the drying difficulty's of thick wood.
If you want exactly 100x50 you ask for it as DAR(dressed all round)but you will pay a premium for it, if you need 100x50 and have the machinery to process it order it oversized about 5~10mm in each dimension as most stock is "off the saw"(rough sawn).....................................................................

You could have a look at www.timberdirect.com.au
They go up to 42mm dressed on their website.

Hi Rhys,
Try the HSC on-line site.
I know there's all the information that you need on there. I used it with a class last week.
I'd strongly suggest that you go through all the exercises on this before you start making the project or buy your timber.

There's a link in there to a timber merchant and other industry resources. Standard sizes of Jarrah are different to Pine.
Cheers,
