There has been a fair bit of discussion about timber storage. The best version seems to be an angled rack with space for sheet goods underneath.

That's not such a bad idea, maybe do as I have done and replace the black square tubing that is bolted to the wall with longer lengths, about 1800mm to 2400mm so the spacings are greater. However don't forget not to overload them though, each level has a 50kg limit and now that there is a greater amount of space between the levels/shelves the tendencies are to fill them - don't.

You'll need a free standing steel job for that much weight, as a wooden one would need to be pretty chunky which in turn would take up valuable extra rack space.
What about looking for some second hand pallet racks?

I reckon the pallette racks you saw would be the go - I used Dexion frames for mine, but nothing like the weight youre talking about ..... they do the job though.

    have fun

If you had read on in that thread you would have seen the engineering math for the rating of that timber rack.

this was worked on math only and did not take into account the inherent strenght of the timber which would actually increase its load rating.
so this rack would in fact take over 3 ton.

But what Flash said is true about the size of the timber rack Vs size of a steel rack.

    Cheers Ian

You could use an "A" Frame design. You would only need a 1000mm at the bottom, Say 2000mm at the apex. 3 A frames over 4000mm made from heavy wall 50mm RHS (square tubing) & a 50mm angle iron at the bottom, centre & top of each side. Outward lugs (also angle & set at rightangles to the RHS)for board storage & the centre of the apex for sheet storage. This would only take a little over 4sq meters of floor space & I think it would hold your 2 tonn of timber without any problems, but I am boilermaker, not an engineer. Hope this makes sence to you as I kind of nutted it out as I was typing, not a lot of thought gone into it.

Further to my previous, a quick sketch to help explain. The details sketched in the first A frame would be the same for all 3.

I have built all of mine from timber (65mm x 32mm) attached below is a small rack at home I built, it can hold up to 4 cubic metres of timber.

I am in the process of constructing a larger unit in my timber storage shed 5 metres wide by 3.6 metres high. It will have horizontal members every 600mm to 2.4 metres and the upper section above this will be used to rack green timber to dry, forgot to take the camera with me today. Will try and remember on my next visit next weekend.
