    Default Timber Supply in Adelaide

    Hey all,

I know this question has been asked a couple of times, but I've checked other threads and the yellow pages and still can't seem to find (online) the dimension of wood that I'm after.

I've found some plans for a loft bed online that I would like to build for my nephew. It calls for 2x4 and 2x6 lengths of wood. The plans are american, so I've figured that the dimensions that I would need that are equivalent in Australia is a 90x45mm length and a 135x45mm length, however I can't find anywhere that does dimensions bigger than the 90x45..

I have very limited knowledge of sourcing timber, I mainly use Bunnings' website as a the bible, but I've also checked out Bone Timber and other hardware stores, although not a lot of them list their timber available.

I also want to build myself a bed frame, and want to use thick square posts for the legs and long thick side pieces (basically like a sleeper), but I can't seem to find them anywhere either! I could always glue two 90x5mm pieces together to make a square for the legs, but then the post is only 90mm thick, which is not as big as I'd like..

Where would be the best places for me to look for these kinds of seemingly rare cuts of wood?

I live in the south of Adelaide (Seaford), so somewhere around here would be preferable..

    Thanks,
    Luke

    Hi Luke,

I'm not sure what species of timber that you are after. If it is standard pine the sizes that you mentioned shouldn't be too hard to get hold of. If you are after something a little more exotic it may get harder (more expensive). For the loft bed I personally would just go with pine and then use one of those tinted finishes to give it a little more class.

Not many timber places list what they have in stock online so you will have to call around. If they don't have it they should be able to get it in for you. I would try some of the following:

    http://www.durablehardwoods.net.au/
    http://www.goodwoodtimber.com.au/index.html
http://www.ottotimber.com.au/ (if you want something exotic)
http://www.satreesalvage.com.au/#services (closing down but may still have something - although you may have to machine yourself if you can)
I think that Bone would have what you are after if you called.

    Cheers

    Stinky

    G'day Luke,

Otto was also who I had in mind, I did a bit of business with them over the years

I cant remember if it was them or some other mob that had a yard up behind the BP servo on the corner of Portrush and Magil Rd

Standard size would likely be 140 x 45 not 135. From memory you would be looking at 120, 140, 190, 240 etc Available in 35 or 45

If I recall correctly Ottos had a second yard in one of the back streets around there. They moved everything from it a few years ago down to the one site now just off Magill Road. Unless you were thinking of http://www.australiantimbers.com/ who are still there right behind the BP - but I think their solid timber is located in Gillman.

I recall Ottos had two yards but maybe Australian Timbers is the one I was thinking of.

I lived in Adelaide till 96 so bit of water under the bridge since then. Still neither of these yards are close to Seaford. There is a bunnings down that way.

Hey thanks for the replies guys! I would have replied sooner but I didn't get notification emails :/.

Anway, I am just after something that will be strong enough for a bed frame, so pine is perfectly fine. I don't want to play with exotic stuff just yet lest I destroy it with shotty workmanship..

I shall give those places a call and see what they have, thanks!

Any half reasonable hardware should stock pine in a size to suit your desire. Maybe not bunnings. Try a builders hardware or even mitre 10 or home hardware. If they don't have it they are likely to point you to a close supplier.

For standard pine I would agree with this.

There is also Southern Timber, O Sullivans Beach Rd, heading east from Lonsdale highway its almost at the top on the southern side. Used to get most of my pine from them when living in area,
also Quinn Timber, Walla & Krawarri St's, theirs is not all top quality. but used to have good pricing. they dont have a website
I would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds
