Question Timber top table - Screws or nails?

Hi woodies, I am building a table for use on an outdoor house deck - frame is stainless steel (old food trolley, recycled). Using softwood alaskan cedar (to be painted) slats mounted on wooden subframe. Wondering what sort of screws or nails to use - mainly to avoid staining. Have galv clouts, various screws to countersink... or could use liquid nails + nails. Stainless steel ones a bit much.
Consider the life of table might be only 5+ years, as exposed to weather.
    Your help sought. Thanks Ric

Stainless will outlast the table and not too cheap. fubar's idea is a good one and would be strong. Out of sight and out of mind.
    Reality is no background music.
