Time Life Custom Woodworking books
Hi all,
I recently ordered the Custom Woodworking series of books from Time Life, and recieved them last night. They look great, and I'm looking fwd to hopping into the various plans over the next while (there is years worth!!!) Loads of tips, good for the solo woodworker.
I'm going to start with a traditional bench, and I will do a bit of a WIP if anyone is interested.

I have the whole set - about 12 titles or so- lots of ideas, even if you don't make any of the plans specifically.

12 Titles?!? I thought there was only 6. This could cost me a fortune They are good arent they. Stuart, when you have used the plans, do you make things in imperial or convert to metric?

I was converting to metric, but now that I have an incra jig (which can only be imperial - because all my dovetail bits etc are imperial), then guess it is now 3 7/32" ) (The americans are crazy....... )

I have quite a few of the older time life art of woodworking series (maybe 30+ so far & still got a few to get...love ebay) Also got the newer series from time life the custom woodworking series. ALL the plans in those are from woodsmith US and a lot have been in woodsmith AUS in metric. I was glad to see the end of them actually because I found there was too many on the workshop gear/benches/jigs for everything & not enough on furniture.

I have 19 titles from a similar series called The Workshop Companion, all by Nick Engler, and published by Rodale Press.

Redgy,
They do seem to have a hell of a lot of workshop type projects. how many chisel racks do you need?? I guess I'll just pick and choose, and enjoy the reading as well as the making!
Working in imperial is going to be a challenge in itself i think.... this could be the first time i dont curse my tape and ruler for having both scales on it.Young kids cancels shed time

If anyone decides to buy the set (or what remains of the set) first check out their special deals. If you register first- free postage plus other goodies. May be worth a phone call to see if you can arrange a deal.

I've got 9 of these titles. I subscribed to them when I saw the ad on tellie one day. From memory I think it was around the $25 mark. I have found them pretty good, and have made a list of projects I wish to do out of them.
The only negative I have found is the imperial measurements. But as someone else has said, some of the exact projects in these books have turned up in metric in Australian Wood Smith.
I'll be keeping an eye on ebay and book shops for the remainder.
Cheers,
Nathan.
