Most Tiny Houses are made to be transportable. If that is your aim you will have an issue at 3.5m wide.

Why would it be a problem, houses are always on the move here, whether it be tiny or full size ones.
He might also be building it on a permanent site?
I wouldn't mind a place lke that myself.

In Victoria, at least, 3.5m wide is the upper limit of oversize vehicles and they can travel fairly freely, subject to some route and time restrictions. https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/busi...light-vehicles

I'm sure it varies state by state, but I'd imagine it's a similar system.

KBs PensNmore is right, I'm planning to build several on a permanent site, like a commune.

Some very rough plans I drew up.

SWMBO is right into this type of thing so it is the only reason I know anything about it. I suspect she has insidious planes afoot. I believe to conform to the Tiny House code there are strict dimensions. However, that is primarily in the US and many are designed around shipping containers. However, if it is a small dwelling, it can be whatever you want.

You're all making out it's big but the whole house would fit into my living room, which is pretty average sized as living rooms go. Really can't make it any smaller.

I wasn't saying its too big, just that if its to go on the road it would be oversize and you would have to conform to oversize rules. Hence caravans which are as long as a wet week but only 2.5 m wide. If it is being built on site and staying there you have no problem.

I do have another dilemma though, which is that the council may require the tiny homes to be mobile because they only permit one permanent building on some plots. Anyone know about this?

Every council is different. If you are in a single dwelling zone council may well require transportability. Just ask them.

I strongly suggest that instead of getting guesstamated knowledge here on the forum, talk to the planing dept at your local council THEN talk to the building dept.
They are the ones who approve any development and I suspect fairly accurately that you will have a long involved process ahead of you.

John, I haven't built them yet, nor bought the land! This is embryonic.

Put them all on wheels, even if they're not going on the open road, that way you get around council and the fixed dwelling rule. Just say "i'm collecting little houses"

I'd love to join your commune, not so sure about the wife and kids though.

Maybe you can start a wood-lovers Religion and claim to be the supreme leader and skirt a lot of rules claiming religious freedom..... hahaha, I'd definitely be in, forget the wife and kids....... nah, cant do that.
