Toledo Chisels - Made in Sweden
My First post, so go easy on me!!
I have over the past few years collected Toledo Bevel Edge Chisels, Made in Sweden.
I cannot find detailed information on them, unlike Bergs, different handles, different stamping, different stickers etc. This allows anyone collecting Bergs to date and understand their value.
Having a good range, I can now see differences, different metal stamping (Font), different size stickers (Whats left of them anyway), and even the timber handles seem slightly different, some feel heavier than others. Some have Toledo Steel Made in Sweden on the bevel side whilst others have it on the underside.
Can anyone give me some assistance in trying to establish the different types of Toledo's, perhaps even dating them.
Thx
Jas

Welcome to the forum.
We like photos so please put some up at your leisure.
There's a saying on the forum "without photos it didn't happen."
It takes a little bit of time to do but is worth learning.
I would be interested if you can point me in the direction of a site that dates bergs according to logos.

Back in the 70's, Toledo chisels were manufactured at North Richmond, NSW for some years by Coffey Dowidat (not sure of the correct spelling) from memory, it is now the base for Hanamatch.
They also manufactured adjustable wrenches as well.
I had a set of their chisels but the quality wasn't all that good even though they were stamped.

Thx RW Build
Wow, I have never heard that they were made in Richmond NSW. If that is true nothing like false advertising in the 70's especially when each Chisel states made in Sweden.
I am not ignorant to other branded chisels, I also have Bergs, Marples (Not Irwin), Sandviks, Titans and a few others.
I agree that they are not the best chisel in the market place but here is what i found comparing with the others mentioned
Toledo are more prone to pitting, and take longer to flatten and hone then most, but the edge holds well.
Bergs are softer and easier to flatten and hone, but needs more sharpening then Toledo
Marples - Easier to sharpen and flatten, holds edge well can be brittle at times.
Sandviks - Black Handles surprisingly easy to sharpen and the edge holds extremely well (Real surprise packet especially for the current prices) but Prone to pitting
Titans - Harder to sharpen and flatten, edge holds well, is a little brittle at times and prone to pitting
As for other makes, I cannot comment as my experience is limited
I use all the above, for different reasons but actually like the feel and weight of the Toledo's.

Maybe if you had posted in the HAND TOOLS - UNPOWERED - Woodwork Forums you might have, as some members don't look in the octher sections.

Hi Pac_man...
I did see your previous Q about my comment, and since then I tried to find the location. It was several years ago, and I think it was on a canadian or english wood forum, whereby someone started to date their Bergs, and from there more people added their response and by the end you could nearly work out the era it was made. I cannot find it, tried searching for it. the reason I know about it was that i bought a Berg Socket 3/4 inch from the markets for $7, and i wanted to know the age, hence my original search. Sorry would love to have given you the link..
