    Default tool box

    Due to an increasing number of small machining tools I thought I would buy a machinists chest the cost got me and I thought I could make one but as dovetails are an arcane art to me I made it on the KISS method and used what was on hand so p. crapiata was it. Once finished I thought it looked to new so a bit of stain and satin finish and yep will do me. Maybe not the best around but then I'm no cabinetmaker. Pics included but forgot to leave the lid up and prior to the finish coat.

    Actually I approve. I think working boxes can sometimes be too pretty - 3 questions;

    1 - does it do what it's designed to do?
    2 - Would you be worried of damaging it?
    3 - would you be upset if you did damage it?

    More than one 'Yes' and you've got a problem!

    Yep, looks neat & functional to me. If you choose the right bits, radiata can be a strong, stable wood & a perfectly good choice for a job like this, I reckon. I think most of its bad reputation comes from the fact that economics decrees that every part of the trunk gets sawn & sold, instead of only the better bits...

    Thanks for the kind comments
    To answer your question Dragonfly
    1/ yes
    2/ no
    3/ no
    so there it is made for a purpose and I'm happy
    As to p radiata I use it a lot for other jobs and it works. total cost of materials was less than $50 and the time to me was enjoyment. If I bought the 1 that was advertised for $199 I would be worried about damaging it instead of it being a work item.
