H4 or H3 post
Hi, I am replacing a 90 x 90 post on carport. I will be using a gal metal stirrup. The treated timber is not touching the ground. Can I use H3 or do I need H4 post.

H3 is for weather exposed above ground applications, H4 for in ground, so H3 is sufficient.
Any above ground durability class 1 hardwood is also sufficient, without requiring any treatment.

I assume you are going to paint it, to mitigate cracking/checking, and make sure you give the ends plenty of paint (twice as many coats as the body), particularly the bottom end. It is more likely than not that the timber you will purchase will still have plenty of moisture in it, which can potentially make the timber move around.
Probably best to leave it unpainted ('cept the ends) for a while to let it settle, but the problem with that is that it could start cracking almost immediately.
Even better for the timber to stirrup joint is plenty of Sikaflex. Not cheap at ~$18 a tube, but a brilliant long lasting product. Apply a virtual slab of Sika so that it squeezes out when you fit the joint. Clean it up, and then fine clean with turps. Sika takes paint very well. Spreading a smear of Sika on the other end is also a good idea, then paint it.

Hi FenceFurniture, thank you for the information about Sikaflex. I will get a tube. I have not used it before. My son has cartons of it at his factory, but he wouldn't give me any. Meany!!!
